Marriages go through a lot of challenges as years pass by and progress. Financial necessities, growing children, careers, individual ambitions and aspirations, professions – these are just few of the things that tremendously affect the quality of relationship between couples. One challenge that can also affect a marriage relationship is erectile dysfunction or ED.

The good thing about those who went into marriage with their eyes “open” and their hearts committed is that they understand that marriage is a partnership; and for those who truly love their partners, they would do anything to make a relationship last.

ED is known to negatively affect relationships. But, if you are one of those who’s willing and open to learn how to cope and live with ED, here are some information that can help you do just that.

Sometimes, wives of men who have ED blame themselves for the problem. They think that they are no longer attractive that’s why the husband is having a difficult time getting stimulated. Some men also do the same; they blame their wives for their ED problem. It is important that both husband and wife understand that ED is a medical problem and there are now ways to address this condition. There is help.

To deal with ED, therefore, communication is vital. The husband should talk about his problem to his wife, and the wife has to help her husband in any way possible. One significant way that a wife can make a difference is by telling her husband that she is with him all the way; that she is willing to help him and support him. By showing commitment and support, the husband will be more willing to address the problem and seek medical help.

For Wives

Do your best to find out as much as you can about ED. Knowing about ED can do much as the more you know about it, the more you’ll be able to support your husband or partner. When getting treatment for ED, both of you should agree on the method that you think is best for your condition.

Communication is Essential in Marriage

Surely your partner has done his part in finding out as much as he can about ED (probably without letting you know about it). The best that you can do is to assure him that ED is common and is a very treatable medical condition.

Assure him also that ED is has not diminished his masculinity; that he is still the man you know him to be; and that he will always be that man for you.

Motivate your partner or husband to live a healthier lifestyle. On your part, prepare healthier meals. This will tell him that you care about his health and his well-being.

If he’s okay with it, accompany him when he meets with his doctor. Always show him that you care; and if at first try some medications will not give the desired result, assure him that there are many other options for successful treatment.

Most importantly, remind yourselves that sexual intimacy is only a part of a loving relationship. There are many ways to express love, and ED should not be made a reason to stop loving each other.

Researchers from Harvard found that optimists, people who are disposed to take a favorable view of things, have lower blood pressure levels, heart disease rates, and are generally healthier and happier. Moreover, health experts are saying that optimism greatly reduces the risk of stroke.

People face life’s challenges in different ways. Some people have no difficulty “bouncing back”. There are, however, people who have difficult time coping with troubles and challenges in life. They are often referred to as “pessimists”, people who look at the glass “half-empty”.

Unfortunately for people who are like this, one thing is very certain, the more they focus on the negative; they end up more stressed, unhappy, miserable, and unhealthy. Yes, negativity causes stress which eventually causes health problems. People who are stressed have weaker immune system which makes them prone or susceptible to illnesses and/or diseases. On the other hand, people who have sunny dispositions are healthier and live longer lives. According to University of Pittsburgh Medical Center internist Hilary A. Tindle, MD, MPH, attitude matters when it comes to heart disease and health.

So, what is there to do? Fortunately, medical experts say that something can be done to combat negativity or pessimism – by changing a person’s outlook for the better.

How? Here are some suggestions on how to cultivate and stay on the brighter side of life; how to effectively manage and cope with stress.

1. Focus on What’s Good in Your Life.

There’s a song that says “count your many blessings and name them one by one … There is great truth in this counsel. As one focuses on the good things one has in life, the trials, the challenges, the hardships – all these actually becomes less difficult and more bearable in the end.

Martin Seligman, PhD, a psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, published a study in 2005 which asked a group of people to complete the “Three Good Things” exercise. The exercise required the subjects of the study to write three things that went well that day and explain they happened. The subject did this every night for six months. The result was surprisingly pleasant: at the end of the study the participants were happier and less depressed than when they started. The study showed that by forcing the respondents to think about why good things occur in their lives, they started to see their lives in a more positive way, which helped them become more optimistic of their future.

2. Recognize Everything that You Are Grateful For

Gratitude is a very important part of optimism. A 2003 study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology suggested that there is a strong relationship between having a grateful attitude and a heightened sense of well-being.

Some people suggest keeping a stress diary; I suggest the opposite: Keep a gratitude journal! List down everything that you are grateful for at the end of the day and be assured that as you reflect upon all of them, you will be surprised at how good life really is. This realization will surely help you feel better.

3. Make an Effort to Feel Better – It’ll Come Around

According to Mark C. Brown, PhD, psychologist and author of the upcoming book entitled Live Like a Window, Work Like a Mirror, the mind can be tricked into feeling better by making it respond chemically as if things were going well. He further explained that a genuine smile and a forced smile cause the same chemical reactions in the brain, so when a person acts in an optimistic way, when he smiles, laughs, tells a joke, the mind responds positively.

Influenza or flu is a very infectious respiratory disease caused by A or B influenza viruses.

Flu often appears during winter and early spring.

The flu virus attacks the body by spreading through the upper and/or lower respiratory tract.

How is the Flu Virus Spread?

The flu virus is spread when an infected person sneezes or coughs and someone, or another person in near proximity either inhales the infected droplets in the air or when he comes in direct contact with the infected person’s secretions through the following: hand to hand contact, sharing handkerchiefs and other items, through the sharing of objects such as spoons and forks, and kissing. The virus can also be transferred when a person touches smooth surfaces such as equipment handles, doorknobs, computer mouse, computer keyboard, television remote control, mobile phones, game consoles, and telephones. The person becomes infected as the flu virus is absorbed by the body when he touches his hands to his eyes, nose, or his mouth.

To protect people from contacting flu, frequent and thorough hand washing is encouraged in densely populated areas such as in schools, hospitals, offices, military barracks, market places, even in restaurants and fast food chains.

What are the Symptoms of Flu?

Since the symptoms of flu are almost similar to the symptoms of colds, many people commit the mistake of not realizing that it’s flu they have and not colds. When this happens, flu is not treated accordingly and this can be very bad for the patient suffering from flu because flu is much worse than colds.

So the most common question asked is what’s the difference between a colds and flu? Or going directly to the point, what are the symptoms of flu?

First, a common cold may cause weakness and malaise and may drag you down a bit, but the flu makes getting out of bed very difficult.

Colds and flu cause sore throat, sneezing, coughing, headache, congestion, and chest discomfort. However, when the person runs a high fever for several days and has the following: headache, myalgia, fatigue, and weakness, then its definitely flu. In severe flu cases, complications can happen such as pneumonia which is a life-threatening illness.

What is the Treatment for Flu?

Is there a treatment for flu? This is a good question!

There’s really no cure for flu, but there are medications that can ease or help reduce the flu symptoms. A few antiviral medications are available and antibiotics may be helpful if there is a secondary bacterial infection. Remember this though; antibiotics will not cure flu because flu is a viral infection and antibiotics are for bacterial infections.

Is Arthritis Caused by Aging?

According to health and medical experts, no, arthritis is not caused by aging, although majority of arthritis sufferers are older people. The explanation for this is simple: “older joints have had more wear and tear”, this is according to Dr. Patience H. White, vice president of public health for the Arthritis Foundation. Moreover, Dr. White said that a little over 27 million people with arthritis living in the United States are under 65 years old, that even children get arthritis.

Can Osteoarthritis Be Prevented?

If one or both your parents have osteoarthritis, especially hand osteoarthritis, then the possibility that you’ll have osteoarthritis is great.

However, for many people, osteoarthritis can be prevented. Here are ways to prevent osteoarthritis:

1) Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight or obesity has a lot to do with the development of osteoarthritis especially in the knee. Simply put, the heavier the person is, the more stressed will be the joints since the joints carry the full load or weight of the upper body.

2) If you are an athlete, or a sports enthusiast, avoid injuries at all cost, and find best ways to modify exercise movements so you don’t put too much pressure or stress on your joints. If you are engaged in high-impact sports, the best thing that you can do to prevent stressing out your joints is to gradually increase your training schedule. If you have had accidents in the past that injured your joints, it’s always safer and healthier, bone and joint-wise, to avoid high-impact activities to prevent further damages.

3) Strengthen your muscles by exercising regularly. This is essential because muscle weakness is considered another risk factor for osteoarthritis. Be sure, however, that the type of exercise you will do will help your become better and healthier. For best advice, consult your doctor.

Is It Safe to Move Around When You Have Osteoarthritis?

If you have osteoarthritis, it is highly recommended by medical experts that you move around, or better yet, exercise. Proper exercise motions helps lessen osteoarthritis pain. They also improve function, range of motion, as well as reduce disability. Another good thing when you do regular exercise: it helps you achieve and maintain a healthy weight.

For better medical advice on osteoarthritis, see your doctor and talk to him about your concerns and your plans. He is in the best position to give you the best advice when it comes to dealing with osteoarthritis.

In a maturing person’s life, especially with women, a feeling of anxiety and melancholy comes from out of the blue, usually unexpected. This is often labeled as mood swings or at worst, depression. It can be mild, moderate, to severe.

There are many reasons for the mood swings or depression, and one of this is the lowering of estrogen in maturing women during the perimenopausal stage, which generally begins when a woman turns 40, but it can also start during the early 30s or even earlier.

Do you know that there are foods that can actually improve how you feel? These are feel-good foods that should be made part of your daily diet to scare the “blues” away.

So what are these foods? Here they are.

Green Leafy Vegetables

Vegetables in general contain magnesium which has been known to have a calming effect when taken. Spinach is the best, but other vegetables such as peas, broccoli, and artichokes contain a healthy dose of magnesium.

Good Carbohydrates

Choose the right kinds of carbohydrates because they are very important as they contain tryptophan, an amino acid that helps produce serotonin, which helps in maintaining good mood. Good sources of carbohydrates include whole grains, vegetables, and fruit. Avoid if you can white bread, pasta, and rice.

Have a Hearty, Healthy Breakfast

Never skip breakfast as this will worsen your mood swings. The advise is even to eat like a king during breakfast. Eat lots of wholegrain, a healthy porridge such as oatmeal, or protein-rich eggs.

Omega 3 Fats

Load up on foods rich with Omega 3 fats such as tuna, salmon, mackerel and other oily fish. Moreover, studies show that EPA, one of the two types of omega-3 fats, is one of the most effective natural anti-depressants because it helps to build brain cell connections. It also increases the production of serotonin, the feel-good hormone.

Vitamin B Complex

Vitamin B1 is utilized by the brain to help convert glucose into fuel which is badly needed by the body. Without this fuel, the body ends up always tired and when this happens, fatigue, anxiety and insomnia sets in. Deficiency of Vitamin B5 leads to chronic stress and depression. Vitamin B6 on the other hand is needed for the manufacture of serotonin and dopamine, both of which help regulate the mood.

Now that you know, don’t let the mood swings stay long. Load up on these foods and start feeling good!

To live a healthy life is everybody’s quest. Unfortunately, it’s something that’s not really very easy to do because passions and appetites are very difficult to curve or bridle at times. But it can be done, and it does not really matter if you’re young or old, now is always the best time to start.

So if you are really determined to start living healthy, here are 4 easy tips for healthy living that are doable and very practical.

1. Drink Water!

Drink at least 8 glasses of water everyday. You sure have heard your Mom say this to you every mealtime, and she’s right! The body needs water to keep it hydrated. The body also needs water to function effectively and efficiently. For example, water is needed to flush toxins out of vital organs. Water is needed to carry nutrients to the cells. Water also provides a moist environment for the ear, the nose, and throat tissues.

2. Avoid all foods that are white!

The explanation is simple: they are white because they have been processed, and processed food is unhealthy. Go for the healthy foods. With bread for instance, eat whole wheat and not white bread. Instead of white rice, go for brown rice. Unprocessed food contains natural vitamins and minerals that benefit the body, so choose them over their unhealthy counterparts.

3. Exercise, Exercise, Exercise

Exercise is something that’s non-negotiable. It’s as simple as if you want to be healthy, you have to exercise.

Most people do not like to exercise, but it’s just because they don’t really understand the fact that exercise does not have to be difficult or punishing in nature. In reality, a simple 30 minute walk is already a good cardio exercise. Dancing is an aerobic exercise. Doing gardening, rearranging furniture, even washing your car are already forms of exercises as these activities burn calories.

Do you know that even fidgeting burns at least 200 calories in a day?

4. Get Enough Sleep.

Ideally, for adults, get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep. This is essential because sleep restores cells. Sleep also helps in maintaining and improving the immune system and aids in the body’s healing process. Enough sleep also improves the skin, making it clean and clear (scares the acne away) and it gives the skin a beautiful glow.

Start living healthy now by doing these 4 easy and practical steps: drink 8 glasses of water; avoid “white” foods as much as possible; exercise at least 30 minutes a day; and lastly, sleep for 7 to 8 hours a day.

It’s just a fact of life, certain foods can be good for you, and there are also certain types that will do you more harm than good. This is especially true if you are suffering from osteoporosis. Since osteoporosis is something that can not be reversed; meaning that once you have it I’ll always be with you, the next best thing that you can do is to manage it so that it will not progress.

This calls that you avoid certain types of food. Avoiding them may require self control on your part, but I’m sure for the sake of health, it’ll be something that’s worth doing, especially if the prize is stronger and healthier bones.

So what are these foods to avoid if you have osteoporosis?

1. Salt

Salt

Too much salt is bad for the bones! Why is this? According to Linda K. Massey, PhD, RD, a professor of human nutrition at Washington State University in Spokane, for every 2,300 milligrams of sodium taken in, more or less 40 milligrams of calcium is also lost in the urine. This is not good simply because calcium is very important for bone health. For this reason, people are advised to take in as little salt as possible so that calcium will be retained in the body for bone strengthening requirements.

2. Soft Drinks or Carbonated Soft Drinks

Most carbonated drinks available in the market now contain phosphoric acid, which actually increases calcium excretion in the urine. Moreover, all these soft drinks lack calcium. The excess phosphorus in the body promotes calcium loss calcium intake is low.

A good alternative to soft drinks would be the following:

A healthy, fresh, and delicious fruit smoothie made by combining in a blender 8 ounces fat-free yogurt, one medium banana or a cup of fresh or frozen berries and 2 ice cubes;

Orange juice fortified with calcium and vitamin D;

A mixture of fortified orange juice and seltzer or club soda that’s free of phosphoric acid

Fat-free plain milk or chocolate milk

3. Caffeine

Coffee contains caffeine

Do you know that people lose about 6 milligrams of calcium for every 100 milligrams of caffeine consumed?

It’s almost similar to what happens when too much salt is taken into the body; you loose calcium.

So does this mean a person with osteoporosis can not take anything with caffeine? Not necessarily. Limiting caffeine will do, to as much as 300 milligrams per day. This is good enough as long as adequate calcium intake is ensured on a daily basis from calcium supplements and a well-balanced diet.

Since coffee is the culprit here as most caffeine intake is due to coffee drinks, it will be best to start reducing coffee intake by replacing the coffee drink with something else with less caffeine. Maybe one can start drinking half regular and half-decaffeinated drinks as a start. Then as much as possible avoid caffeine-laden drinks and choose decaffeinated iced tea or hot tea instead.

Living with osteoporosis is not really very hard as long as one is willing to begin living a healthy lifestyle. This requires streamlining the diet and avoiding some harmful stuff such as salt. It also requires giving up carbonated drinks and caffeine.

You might raise an eyebrow over this topic, but yes, this is true! Swimming is one amongst the few best exercises for mature individuals and is a perfect way for them to get in shape and improve overall well being.

One of the major benefits of swimming for mature individuals is that it tones and strengthens bodies in a safe way.

Swimming is also very safe and easy because it allows older people to move their bodies without bearing their total weight. Since the body is just about the same density as water, it is easily supported by it; the water allows the joints and the bones to freely move stress-free during the swimming exercise.

With swimming, mature individuals are given a chance to be vibrant and healthy. It also helps improve mobility. Compared to other exercises which pose hazards or dangers in the joints and hips, swimming is next to walking as the safest form of exercise for mature individuals. Again, next to walking, water based exercises such as swimming have the lowest impact rate for injuries. Water also affords people more choices for those who are extremely lacking in general fitness or those who have an earlier injury that makes land-based exercises difficult. They can do stretches and strokes with the aid and support of the water.

Because swimming works the entire body, it offers the same benefits one gets when one goes into aerobic exercises or strength training.

Other benefits that can be enjoyed as a result of swimming as an exercise are as follows:

Improves cardiovascular conditioning

Greatly improves flexibility

Improves physical appearance due to muscle toning

Betters or improves posture

Increases muscle strength

Eases muscle tension

Improves balance

Maintenance of healthy weight

Controls appetite

Reduces stress

Reduces risk of osteoporosis

What’s also nice with swimming is the fact that it’s not really very difficult to look for swimming pools because most retirement homes or complexes have swimming pools exclusively for their residents. These indoor pools are specially equipped to meet the special needs of seniors. For example, because cold water increases joint stiffness and aggravates movement difficulty for people with arthritis, these indoor pools found in retirement homes are kept at comfortable temperatures perfect for the seniors.

Start your swimming exercise now and enjoy every minute of it!

Remember the time you stood on your feet for a very long time? Remember how you felt after working the whole day, after picking things up or pushing things around, how your back ached and your legs felt almost numb? I bet my bottom dollar you were sore all over, and you longed for a chair to sit on and probably a back rub or a foot massage.

We’ve all been in this situation many times, and if you’re like most ordinary folk, chances are you’ve also imagined how nice it would be and what a great relief you’d feel if someone was kneading your leg muscles and pressing your toes with just the right pressure to release the tension there.

Yes, that’s what a massage can do for you; it’ll make you feel relaxed after a hard day and it’ll allow your muscles to rest.

Do you know that there are more or less 80 massage therapy styles being practiced today using a wide variety of pressures, movements, and techniques? All these 80 massage therapy styles entail the rubbing, pressing, or manipulating of muscles and other soft tissues with the use of the massage therapists hands and fingers. Sometimes, in situations when the person getting the massage is big in stature, forearms, elbows, or feet are also used.

Important Things to Remember

Okay, so now you are excited to get that relaxing massage! Good for you! However, before doing anything, here are some things you need to do.

o First ask yourself why you want the massage in the first place. It is simply for relaxation? Do you want to be relieved from stress? Or maybe you want something more, such as to cure an ailment of some sort.

o Second, when you have your answer, it will be wise to ask your doctor. He may have some recommendations for you prior to your massage session.

o Third, ask your doctor, your friends, your associates, or members of your family if they can recommend to you a very good and trustworthy/reliable massage therapist. It’s always better to go to someone that everybody has vouched for. This means he or she is good at what she does.

o Fourth, talk to your massage therapist and let him know what you want. The therapist can then customize your massage to fit your needs and requirements. Remember that age, special conditions such as medical conditions are always taken into consideration when choosing the best massage style for maximum efficacy.

Most Popular Massage Styles

When longevity is the topic, a lot is being said about what will bring it about: eating the right kinds of food, getting enough exercise, and good genes. According to many studies, these are the secrets towards aging beautifully and living long. However, there is one more key that needs to be included in this list, and it’s called proper or effective stress management.

According to the author of the book “Stress Less: The New Science That Shows Women How to Rejuvenate the Body and the Mind” Thea Singer, studies have shown that there is a direct link between psychological stress and biological aging. Based on a landmark study, chronic stress negatively affects the DNA, literally gnawing them, which in effect speeds up the rate at which the cells age. This is according to 2009 Nobel Prize-winning cell biologist Elizabeth H. Blackburn, Ph.D., and health psychologist Elissa S. Epel, Ph.D., both from the University of California in San Francisco.

So what does it mean to manage stress effectively?

It simply means responding properly to stress. It means acting, instead of fretting, in the face of stress. Thea Singer points out in her book that numerous studies have shown that people who felt that they were in control actually looked different from people who felt that they were not. According to her, it’s really about the way people look at stress; people can not change their circumstances, but they can certainly change the way they look at circumstances.

Things to do to Deal with Stress Effectively

o Exercise – Regular exercise is a proven method of relieving stress. Walking is ideal; you may walk around your neighborhood or at the park for 30 minutes and this will do you wonders. If you don’t feel like going out, hit the treadmill and do at least 30 minutes everyday. You can also do aerobic exercises. Do some stretching as this relieves muscle tension. Breathing exercises can also help relieve stress.

o Get Enough Sleep – When a person is sleep-deprived, or when he is sleeping less, his stress threshold is low.

o Eat Right – What will work is minding what is being eaten, which means eating the right kinds of food and consuming the right quantity.

o Think Positive – This means to focus on the positive rather than the negative; to look for the good things in everything. It also means focusing on others rather than the self by doing something nice for someone else on a regular basis.

Stress is a fact of life, and whether we like it or not, there will always be moments in our lives when we will experience it. But it’s something that can be managed, and when done so effectively, it helps keep us young and vibrant and healthy. The four suggestions above are simple and doable; try to do them when you feel stress is getting hold of you.
